New Magic Lantern Director
We’re delighted to announce that Dr Caroline Rae has been appointed as the new Director of Magic Lantern, following a thorough and highly competitive recruitment process.
About Dr. Caroline Rae
Caroline brings to the role her ongoing experience as Magic Lantern Workshop Leader for Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Camden, alongside a distinctive combination of academic expertise, teaching experience and practical knowledge of art and its materials and techniques.
Caroline joins us from The Open University, where she is an Associate Lecturer in History of Art, and the University of Glasgow, where she is a regular Visiting Lecturer and Affiliate Scholar.
Previously Caroline has undertaken research and taught at the Courtauld Institute of Art. Caroline’s approach combines traditional art-historical scholarship with examination of artists’ materials and techniques. Her interest is in art and artists of the Tudor and early Stuart periods, and she has recently published research on the portraiture of Mary, Queen of Scots.
She has also published previously on artists including John de Critz the Elder, Adrian Vanson, and Henry Fuseli RA, and has contributed to the Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon.
New Phase of Development
Caroline’s appointment comes as Magic Lantern enters a new phase of development, with the
recent appointment of several new Trustees, and our brand new logo and website launch.
Commenting on her appointment, Caroline said:

I am incredibly proud to have been offered the opportunity to be Director of such an inspiring and innovative, award winning organisation.”
Caroline’s appointment comes as our previous Director Briony Brickell moves on to a
new role as Head of History of Art at Bryanston School, after several years of outstanding leadership at Magic Lantern. We would like to thank Briony for her dedication and contribution in the role, and her hard work in ensuring a smooth handover. We’re looking forward to continuing to work with her in the future as a Magic Lantern workshop leader.
